Isla Cabuya (2026)

Isla Cabuya, or Isla Cementerio (Cemetery Island) is one of those places on the peninsula which spark my curiosity every time I return. This island is not only the home to tens of burials from centuries of local generations who rest by the pacific, but it can only be accessed during a small window when the tide is low. Walking across the exposed reef of jagged stones from tectonic movements; fishing boats rest on the rocky bottom waiting to take off at high tide, lone light posts wait for the sun to fall, and a duo of stray dogs make their way to the island walking through shallow waters. Not only is the positioning of Isla Cabuya so special, positioned by the tip of the peninsula by Cabo Blanco, but its diverse flora on this rock that spans half a kilometre is impressive. Although a familiar sight to many of us from the eastern part of the peninsula, the island never disappoints with its mysticism.
