You Just Had to Be There (2025)
The above photograph, “You Just Had to Be There”, was taken after New Years in the dunes of Bergen aan Zee. It was a peculiar sight to come across: these mountainous dunes yet so fragile, with the remains of a gathering. What happened? How did this party end? Bottles of champagne, empty tins of caviar, and an abandoned pearl necklace in a sandy backpack were some of the fingerprints of this ensemble. However, what was most striking to me is the environmental imprint that this feast had, and how the spatial concept of the dunes, such an unusual occurrence in The Netherlands, are also seen as a place of play. Atop the hills which we frolic upon, it is the dunes that are this mountain, not rock.
